5. Boy, horse, and locomotive on Bridge 425. - A kid is struggling to pull a horse through the stream as locomotive No. 2179 passes overhead on bridge 425 in Arcadia, Virginia. Winston Link photographed at Bridge 425 on the N&W's Shenandoah Division on at least two occasions. This is a photograph he never published, and which may have been printed only once during his lifetime. It was discovered among his negatives shortly before his death by Mary L. Bachmann, Link's assistant and printer, who made a few prints which he signed. It is among the rarest of Link's signed photos. One doesn't know if Link asked the boy and his spirited horse to pose, or if they just happened to be nearby and he maneuvered them into the photo as Class Y6b locomotive 2179 thundered overhead.

7. Class Y6B Locomotive 2175, Train No. 2 at Bridge 425, Arcadia, Virginia, back view. - Class Y6B Locomotive 2175, Train No. 2 crossing Bridge 425 - view of the right side. In August, 1956, Winston Link created two photographs of Train No. 2 at Bridge 425 which were taken simultaneously from both sides of the locomotive. This is the view of the right side, and shows engineer Walter Finney looking out the cab window for the the photographer. Link had told Finney where he would be photographing that night, but Link was standing by the camera on the opposite side of the locomotive. The challenge in creating two photographs of the same object with the cameras aimed towards each other is to make sure that the lighting on one side of the locomotive doesn't create a blinding glare in the camera on the other side. In this pair of photos Link worked hard to make sure that his large flashbulb reflectors would be hidden from the opposite camera. This shot and NW1108 were made simultaneously. NW1107 is the back view.
