Two golfers and their caddie approach a green in the background. The Homestead property was opened to the public as a lodge in the latter part of the 18th century. In 1832 it was purchased by Doctor Thomas Goode who operated it as a restorative facility for the ill in an era when the thermal waters of the spring, the clean mountain air, and moderate exercise, were considered primary elements of a recovery. In the 1880's a group of investors purchased and developed the property as a resort catering to a well-to-do clientele with the emphasis on recreational activities. A golf course was added and a branch line was built from the Chesapeake and Ohio main railroad line at Covington, Virginia, to carry guests over the arduous terrain to the resort. The Homestead in Hot Springs and the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, are the two premier survivors of the numerous Virginia springs resorts which dotted the landscape of antebellum western Virginia when the affluent spent their summers traveling from spring to spring on what was then known as the "springs circuit".
