Archie Stover, Crossing Watchman. - Archie Stover sat up in the little elevated crossing watchman's shanty in the background during weekdays while local mixed freight Train Nos. 13 and 14 switched freight cars on the tracks nearby. Because they moved across Cave Street behind Stover so frequently, a watchman was required to lower the gates manually as the freights approached. At night the gates were operated automatically. 3. Boaz Siding, the Honey Hole. - Boaz Siding, the Honey Hole, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Grade. The Blue Ridge Grade, a few miles east of downtown Roanoke, Virginia, is a 1.2% grade stretching for eight and a half miles. Until the N&W's merger with the Virginian Railway in 1959 offered easier access to Norfolk, Virginia, Blue Ridge was the last big climb before the long descent to Tidewater. The N&W kept Class Y6 pusher locomotives stationed at Boaz Siding to help heavy coal and merchandise freights over the grade. The spot was quite pretty, with a little table under a willow tree by a little stream. The engine crews kept it tidy, but there were no sanitary facilities there, so the place earned the ironic nickname "The Honey Hole." In one of his most theatrical images, Winston Link has carefully set the scene. To the left, the engineeer and fireman finish their coffee as their locomotive steams quietly behind them, while the caboose of the next train to be pushed over the grade rolls slowly to a stop. Link even provided a special lantern for the people on the caboose. It was wired with a flashbulb and handed up to them as the caboose was passing the pusher locomotive's tender. This was a photograph the photographer enjoyed because of the way in which the willow tree draped over the scene of the locomotive and men.

4. Bobby Goggin at Fringer's Mill. - Bobby Goggin at Fringer's Mill. Winston Link posed Bobby Goggin, a lad from Lithia, with one of Link's Coleman mantle lanterns which might have been bright enough not to require a flashbulb inside the globe. The derelict mill, with its rusty iron water wheel appealed to Link's fascination with old machinery, and Goggin and his lantern add the usual note of human vitality. In the background, a Class Y6 is pushing a northbound time freight to Lofton, Virginia in early April 1956.

6. Cherry logs and a Class Y6 Locomotive at the Fitzgerald Lumber Company. - First 51, a scheduled freight train operating between Hagerstown, Maryland and Roanoke, Virginia, is passing a stack of huge logs in the yards of the Fitzgerald Lumber Company in Buena Vista, Virginia. While waiting for trains on this cold night in March 1956, Winston Link counted the rings on one of the two massive cherry logs in the center of the pile. He recalled with amazement that the tree was more than 300 years old and wondered how it had lasted as long as it did before being cut. 3/25th, 26th, 1956.

7. Class Y6 Locomotive coming from the Washing Plant. - Up until the very end of steam power on the N&W, all locomotives received a wash as part of their maintenance and service. A high-pressure blast of steam and hot water, mixed with a little kerosene, washed away the dirt and left the locomotives gleaming. The hot boiler of this locomotive speeds they drying process in a cloud of steam, which Winston Link has emphasized by putting lights behind the locomotive as well as in front of it.
