Abingdon Branch Conductor Ralph White and laundry on the line. - Here, Ralph White, the conductor of the small mixed freight and passenger train, contemplates the engine as the train's brakeman prepares to set off a freight car on a siding in Damascus, Virginia. Out of respect for the freshly washed laundry hung so daringly close to the tracks, the locomotive will slip by without making smoke.

5. Abingdon Branch Conductor Ralph White helps Janet Dunne. - Serving in his public role as conductor of the train, Ralph White helps Janet Dunne from Train 202 at the stop in Damascus, Virginia. She was taking piano lessons there and had traveled from Taylor's Valley, less than seven miles south. She spent the night in Damascus and returned to Talyor's Valley on Train 201 the following morning.

8. Abingdon Branch Train No. 201 arrives in Damascus, Virginia. - Abingdon Branch Train No. 201, hauled by Class M locomotive 429, passes the Lutheran Church as it arrives in Damascus, Virginia on a crisp October morning in 1955. The grades from Abingdon to Damascus were easy, and more freight cars could be pulled between these two towns than one locomotive could handle in the much steeper climb south of Damascus to White Top. Much of the freight on the Abingdon Branch was either for, or generated by, business in Damascus.

Abingdon Branch Train No. 201 Southbound at "Overlook". - On the road south of Damascus, Virginia, Winston Link found a place where the road was well above the railroad but the tracks were in good view. He called the spot "overlook", as it gave a very good view of the train passing beneath. Here, the pungent coal smoke has lifted sufficiently to show Train NO. 201 southbound passing by. This was a typical "consist," four to eight freight cars, with the old baggage-mail car and passenger car bringing up the rear of the train.

10. Abingdon Branch Train No. 210 Southbound crossing Bridge 42. - Abingdon Branch Train No. 210 Southbound crossing Bridge 42. This is one of the photographs Link made of Class M locomotive 429 crossing Bridge 42 on the branch while he was traveling as a passenger. The countryside south of Damascus, Virginia became increasingly hilly and steep, with little streams in the bottoms of every valley. Heavy rains could bring on flash floods, and the N&W's maintenance of way crews had attached steel cables to the upstream side of this little bridge. The cables were firmly anchored in rocks by the riverbank to help hold the bridge in place during high water.
