Greene Memorial United Methodist Church was founded in 1859 and the present Gothic stone church was erected in 1892 on Second Street SW, between Luck Avenue and Church Avenue. This postcard was printed by E. C. Kropp Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

St. Marks Lutheran Church / Greene Memorial Methodist Church, circa 1893 - A black and white photograph of St. Marks Lutheran (and after 1902) Greene Memorial Methodist Church in Roanoke, Virginia, taken in the 1890s. The main steeple has been cut off in this photograph. The street is not paved and there is a fire hydrant in the foreground. There are electric poles and lines in front of the church. The current address is 402 Second Street SW. This photograph is identical to the photograph in Object ID 1977.35.3. From the book "A History of The City of Roanoke" by Raymond P. Barnes, page 122: "A new Lutheran church was built on the south east corner of Church Avenue and Second (Commerce) Street, presently the site of Greene Memorial Methodist Church. At this time Henry S. Trout and Peyton L. Terry, the wealthiest men in Roanoke, were members of the Lutheran faith and liberal contributors to the church. The edifice cost $ 9,000 and the money was raised and waiting. The new Lutheran church was dedicated on July 8th, 1883." This building was razed in 1891 and a new building constructed in 1892. On October 2, 1902, the congregations of the Lutheran church and Greene Memorial (their church was located at the south west corner of Campbell Avenue and 3rd Street, S.W.) exchanged buildings.
