2. Hotel Entrance, 1938 - Hotel Roanoke circular entrance, in 1938. The Norfolk & Western Railroad Shops can be seen in the right side of the photograph. The new circular, reflecting pool, originally measuring thirty-five feet in diameter, set within a seventy-eight-foot diameter plant surround, designed by A.A. Farnham, can be seen at the hotel entrance. Farnham was a landscape architect then associated with Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He redesigned the gardens to include a formal garden, a surface parking lot occupying the northwest corner of the property, a paved walkway with steps leading from the train station to the hotel's front entry, perimeter plantings of hedges and trees, and the reflecting pool. The Farnham plan also introduced three driveways into the property, leading automobile traffic from Jefferson Street and Wells and Commonwealth Avenues to the hotel's entrance. Today, only the reflecting pool and the driveway to Commonwealth Avenue survive.

Roanoke Catholic School is visible on the left behind the hotel. The hotel's gardens with new plantings and stone wall are visible in the middle ground, along with utility poles, the tops of buildings, and the train platforms. In the foreground is a steel overpass for walking over the railroad tracks. There are crossing signals at the tracks. A two-story brick building is on the other side of the tracks from the hotel. In the hazy background, numerous houses and neighborhoods can be seen.

8. Hotel Roanoke, circa 1930 - A black and white photograph of the exterior of Hotel Roanoke as seen from across the railroad tracks. The covered station platform and utility poles can be seen in the foreground of the picture. The trees in the garden are in full leaf, suggesting that it is spring or summer. The stone wall runs along the border of the garden, and several paths lead down to the street. A new wing has been added to the hotel. In the left-hand side of the photograph, St. Andrew's Catholic Church can be seen. Note the vehicle in the bottom right-hand corner parked against the curb.

9. Hotel Roanoke from the N&W Rail Yard - An unusual black and white photograph of Hotel Roanoke taken from an elevated point across the Norfolk & Western rail yard. The Roanoke Higher Education Building is visible of the left side of the photograph, next to Hotel Roanoke. A tall tree is in the foreground of the photograph, and shadows from the clouds are on the mountains. The grass in the foreground of the photograph is white and washed out. The train yards are in darkness, while Hotel Roanoke and the Roanoke Higher Education Building are in brighter light. Large clouds fill half the sky above the buildings.

10. Hotel Roanoke - Stone Wall and Entrance Gate, 1895 - A black and white photograph of the stone wall surrounding Hotel Roanoke with the wooden stile gate attached to it. The ashlar limestone fencing, with grapevine mortar, and the gate posts have been preserved. Hotel Roanoke can be seen through the trees beyond the wall. Vines are beginning to grow over the top of the stone wall, and some of the trees have not yet begun to flower.
