   Naturalist, hunting, and taxidermy scrapbook compiled by Michael B. Newman of Roanoke, Virginia. Contains a plethora of photos, newspaper clippings, letters from local colleges, and even a piece of tanned 'human' skin. This scrapbook is a small glimpse into Roanoke in the 1930s, especially as it related to hunting and hunt clubs.

4. Looking east on Campbell Avenue from Jefferson, circa 1949 - A black and white photograph looking east on Campbell Avenue from the intersection of Campbell Avenue and Jefferson Street, in Roanoke, Virginia. In the left foreground, the signs of these businesses are visible: Joy Shop, Barr Brothers Jewelers, Oak Hall Clothes, Southern Loan Office, Morgan-Eubank Furniture (all on the north side of Campbell), and on the opposite side, the Rialto Theater, Nelson Hardware Company, the McGuire building and Market Square. Although some streetcar rails are visible in Campbell Avenue, the grand union track arrangement at Campbell and Jefferson (in the foreground of the photograph) has been removed, indicating that the date was sometime after the last day of streetcar operation on July 31, 1948.

5. Marsteller Marble Works - A black and white photograph of the Marsteller Marble Works, erected on the south side of Campbell Avenue SE in 1897 by J. Hartman Marsteller. Mantlepieces, statues, and tombstones were displayed in the storefront window at 21 Campbell Avenue SE. The west portion of the building and a third story, as shown in the photograph, were added around 1905. A sign for Eureka House, a boarding house run by Mrs. Thomas A. Kinsey (Cenella Josephine Jamison) is visible in the middle of the photograph. It occupied upper floors at 19 1/2 Campbell Avenue SE and boarders came from as nearby as Villamont to distant China. Mrs. Thomas Kinsey was the mother of Roy C. Kinsey, who founded the sign company that bears his name. Bright, Krebs & Company operated a house furnishings store at 19 Campbell Avenue SE in the west portion of the ground floor adjacent to Nelson Hardware Company. The Marsteller Marble Works was established in 1887 at 503 South Jefferson Street. After conducting a successful business for a period of ten years, Mr. Marsteller built a three story structure at 21 East Campbell Avenue in 1897 to meet the growing requirements of his trade. This building covered an area of fifty by two hundred feet, and in the front portion are handsome show rooms, with the plant located in the rear.

6. Modern Homes and Bungalows Catalog - 1918

   Form title reads: "1944-CITY OF ROANOKE, VA.-1944 Return of Tangible Personal Property for Local Taxation Only". Form must be filed to the Commissioner of Revenue on or before June 1, 1944, by any taxpayer owning personal property on January 1, 1944. Back of Form lists General Instructions on Fair Market Value, Paintings and Antiques, Conditional Sales Contracts, Automobiles, Payment of Taxes, and Tax Rate.

7. Nelson & Myers Hardware Store - Nelson & Myers Hardware opened their new store on the south side of East Campbell Avenue at 17 East Campbell on January 28, 1898, in this building constructed in 1897. In 1902, the firm reorganized as Nelson Hardware Company when Henry Myers died. A portion of the Marsteller Marble Works building is shown on the left side of the photograph. The following information was taken from the book "History of Roanoke County" by George S. Jack and Edward Boyle Jacobs, page 197: Alexander M. Nelson was born near Staunton in Augusta County, Virginia, on August 25, 1859. He began his business career in 1875 as a clerk in a hardware store conducted by his uncle Henry H. Myers in Lexington, Virginia. He was associated with this business for a period of eight years until the fall 1883,when he entered into a co-partnership with Mr. Myers and established a hardware business in Culpeper,Virginia under the firm name of Alexander M. Nelson & Company. This business was conducted successfully for four and one half years, but wishing to handle merchandise on a larger scale and regarding the opportunities presented by the growing city of Roanoke as ideal, Mr. Nelson moved to Roanoke in the spring of 1888. He named his new firm Nelson & Myers and the business was first conducted on Commerce Street (the Roanoke City Directory for 1896-1897 states the address as 207 Commerce Street, SW), at that time the most prominent street in the city. The business immediately sprang into prominence in its line of trade and continued at that location until 1897, when the business was removed to Number 17 East Campbell Avenue. The firm name remained the same until the death of Mr. Myers in August 1901 when a stock company was formed under the name of the Nelson Hardware Company. The business of the Nelson Hardware Company has expanded with the city's growth until it is now one of the leading wholesale and retail hardware houses in the State. The building located at 207 Bullitt Avenue in downtown Roanoke (most recently occupied by Mostly Sofas) was also known as the Nelson Hardware Company Warehouse #2. After a fire in the Nelson Hardware building, it was torn down. The new Nelson Hardware building was constructed on the adjacent lot to the east and this lot.

8. Rialto Theater - A black and white photograph showing the Rialto Theater located at 9-11 Campbell Avenue, S.E. in Roanoke, Virginia circa 1950. In his book, "A History of the City of Roanoke", author Raymond P. Barnes states on page 584 that the Rialto Theatre opened on December 20, 1920. The silent film "The Devils' Pass Key" was featured, accompanied by The Rialto Symphony Orchestra. Other businesses visible in the photograph (to the left of the Rialto Theatre) include Palace Confectionery, Presto Cafe and Nelson Hardware Company. A Rainbow bread delivery truck is parked next to the Rialto.

9. Wood and Metal Jug - Wood and metal jug for storing turpentine, with a cork stopper; holds one gallon. 19th-20th century, American. There is some writing carved into the wooden part of the jug. The tag attached to the jug indicates: "Nelson Hardware Co., Roanoke, VA."
