1. 40th Gill Congress for Doctors Opens April 3 - March 26, 1967

   One newspaper clipping titled "40th Congress for Doctors Opens April 3" announcing the 40th annual Gill Spring Congress, a refresher course in diseases of the eye, ear, nose, throat, and allied specialties. The Congress was held at the Hotel Roanoke from April 3-7, 1967. The annual Spring Congresses were founded by Dr. Elbyrne G. Gill of Roanoke.

3. An Aerial View of Downtown Roanoke - A black and white aerial photograph of the City of Roanoke, Virginia centered over the downtown area. The Patrick Henry Hotel is a prominent landmark in the foreground with Tinker Mountain in the background. Jefferson Street which is the central traffic artery in the photograph runs from south to north intersected by the Norfolk & Western Railway running from west to east. At the time the photograph was taken the Hunter Viaduct carried traffic from Williamson Road onto Jefferson Street in the downtown area. It has since been razed.

4. An Aerial View of Elliston, Virginia - A black and white aerial photograph of Elliston, Virginia, the place name of a community between Salem, Virginia, and Christiansburg, Virginia, lying along Route 460. It has a population of less than 1,000 people. Its most notable former inhabitant was the illustrator and artist, Walter Biggs, who was born there in 1886, studied in New York, and spent his later years in Salem, Virginia. In earlier times the stage coach traveling between Salem and Christiansburg would stop at the big spring located at Elliston to provide water for the team of horses and the passengers. This was documented in a work by Pennsylvania artist and sometimes Christiansburg resident, Lewis Miller. In more recent times a portion of Route 460 known as the "Elliston Straightaway", a lengthy and stright strip of rural flat divided highway, has provided a speedway for local youths in their souped up cars.

10. Fireplace Tools - Iron fireplace tools with stand. Includes stand with footed bottom tray, and divider/holder at top with holes for the handles of two tools as well as the handle for the stand, all made of iron, as are the working-ends of the shovel and the poker. The three handles and shanks are made of brass. Made in the N & W shops. 20th-century American.

11. Girls at Swing - A photograph of Frances Tice, Ida Penn Shackleford, and Ann Armistead at the swing in the back yard of the home at 502 King George Avenue. Frances Tice later married Robert Claytor who became President of Norfolk & Western Railway. The photograph of these neighborhood girls was taken by Philip H. Trout, amateur photographer, who lived at that address. The names of the girls appear on the back of the photograph along with information regarding the camera settings. This photograph along with approximately 200 other neighborhood photographs and maps can be found in "In Retrospect...The Old Southwest Neighborhood, Roanoke, Virginia" published by the author, Joel Willis Richert, in 2007.

12. Graves-Humphreys Hardware Building on Franklin Road - A black and white photograph of the former Graves-Humphreys Hardware Co. Inc. located at 1948 Franklin Road S.W. Recent construction or renovation is obvious based on the debris adjacent to the perimeter of the structure. Graves-Humphreys was a distributor of tools, hardware, agricultural items, paints, oils, and glass. The company was also popular with Roanoke youth as the premier provider of sporting equipment and team uniforms. The portion of the building nearest the Norfolk & Western Railway tracks was previously plant number 2 of Roanoke Ice & Cold Storage.

18. Mrs. John Allen Watts - A black and white photograph of Mrs. John Allen Watts in fancy dress and hairstyle for some unknown occasion. Her maiden name was Gertrude Lee, and she was born in Staunton, Virginia, on October 15, 1862, a product of the marriage of Hugh Holmes and Mary Criss Lee. Her grandfather, George Hay Lee, served on the Supreme Court of Appeals of the Commonwealth of Virginia until the war broke out. After the war Gertrude resided in Salem with her family. Following her father's death in 1869 she resided in Baltimore, Maryland with her mother and grandfather, until her marriage to Mr. Watts in 1880 which brought her back to the Roanoke Valley. Mr. Watts, a lawyer by profession, became Counsel for the Norfolk and Western Railway Company in 1881 and he and his wife Gertrude became prominent members of the Roanoke community. Gertrude was active in the women's suffrage movement and served as first vice-president of the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia in 1914.
