7. Martha Anne Woodrum, 1950 - A black and white photograph of Martha Anne Woodrum and Bob Donahoe, manager of Woodrum Field, the Roanoke, Virginia regional airport. Miss Woodrum was a well-known pilot. She is riding on a motor bike sidecar driven by Mr. Donahoe. The sidecar has "Woodrum Field" printed on the front. Martha Anne Woodrum, 1950 - A black and white photograph of Martha Anne Woodrum (later Mrs. Jack Zillhardt) shown with her Beechcraft Bonanza, the plane in which she won the Transcontinental Air Race in 1950. Miss Woodrum was sponsored in the race by Roanoke furniture manufacturer Johnson-Carper. The airplane has "Fashion Trend" printed on the side. Miss Woodrum is holding her trophy from the race and they are shown at Woodrum Field, now Roanoke Regional Airport, with the tower in the background.

9. Martha Anne Woodrum In Her Office - A black and white photograph of Martha Anne Woodrum (later Mrs Jack Zillhardt) shown in her office at Woodrum Field at what is now known as the Roanoke Regional Airport. Soon after becoming a licensed pilot circa 1940 Martha Anne operated a flight school and charter service and later an aircraft sales and service operation at Woodrum Field. She was the first woman in Virginia to earn an instrument rating. A most adventuresome lady and award winning pilot, she was born on September 1, 1916 and died on May 22, 2002. The airport facilities were dedicated as "Woodrum Field" on October 13 1941 in honor of her father, Clifton Alexander Woodrum, Congressman, who had worked successfully to bring airmail service to Roanoke and in 1941 secured $560,000 in federal funds for airport improvements. 12. Roanoke, Virginia airport 1946 - Pioneer pilot Wes Hillman flies his new 1946 Ercoupe over Roanoke's Woodrum Field. Buildings below are: bottom------airport's first terminal (converted from Clayton Lemon's hanger): middle-----airports first hanger; and top-------one of the original hangers at Langley Field. Langley officials gave the hanger to the state, which split the building and gave half to the Staunton airport (where it is still in use in1986) and half to Roanoke for use as Woodrum's second hanger. Roanoke later sold their building to local pilot, Bob Miller, who moved it to Williamson Road in Roanoke, where it is now in use as a commercial building.
