1. Family portrait in sepia tones and mounted to a black cabinet card. Majority of family is seated on the sidewalk, with two men standing in back. Yard is fenced off with a decorative wrought iron fence. Reverse of card states photograph was taken c. 1887, but based on the woman and young girl's clothing, it is probably closer to 1894/1895. Additional text reads: Judge Thomas Flournoy Barksdale at his home 540 Salem Ave Roanoke, Va. 2. Academy of Music - A black and white photograph of the Academy of Music located at 410-414 Salem Avenue S.W. (betweeen 4th and 5th Streets) in Roanoke, Virginia. This photograph was taken between 1930 and 1945. The Academy of Music opened October 7, 1892, and was one of the most ornate structures in Roanoke. However, through the years the building fell into neglect, and it was demolished in 1953 to the regret of many.

3. Acorn Bank Building, 1987 - A color photograph of the Acorn Bank and Trust Company Building, located at 1019 Salem Avenue SW, situated on the north side of Salem Avenue, west of 10th Street on City of Roanoke tax parcel No. 1110812. The bank operated for several years beginning in the mid-1920s and by 1930 had become a finance company. The building stood vacant in 1932. The 1928 Roanoke City Directory (page 63) indicates Acorn Bank Company Inc. was an African-American owned business with J. H. Pinkard as president, Reverend W. W. Hicks as vice-president, and Mary Pinkard (Mr. Pinkard's wife) as treasurer. J. H. Pinkard was also the owner of The Acorn, a retail druggist, located at 1018 Salem Avenue, SW.

Aerial view, 1968 - A black and white aerial photograph of Hotel Roanoke taken in December 1968, showing the hotel bounded by Wells Avenue, Jefferson Street, Williamson Road, Shenandoah Avenue, and Interstate 581. The photo shows the Norfolk & Western Railroad Passenger Station, the Norfolk & Western Railroad General Offices Building, the Norfolk & Western Railroad Shops, and the Hotel Earle on Campbell Avenue. It also shows the viaduct connecting Williamson Road and Salem Avenue. There are passenger and freight trains on the tracks. The covered swimming pool at the hotel is visible at the rear of the hotel.

The sign on the side of the buggy says "Uncle Steve" has been driving a bell team for 28 years. At the bottom of the sign it reads Andrews-Tinsley Co. Coal, Coke, Wood. He is sitting in front of W.K. Andrews and Co., located at 211 Salem Avenue, Roanoke Virginia.

8. Capitol Saloon, circa 1913 - This photograph is identified as an interior view of the Capitol Saloon at 23 Salem Avenue SW, Roanoke, Virginia. In 1900, nine saloons had Salem Avenue addresses. This saloon appears in the city directory for the first time in 1902 as the Raleigh Cafe which occupied the property until 1913 when it became occupied as the Capitol Saloon with Hacke & Holbrook as proprietors. The "boy" behind the bar on the left is identified as George Hacke by the donor of the photograph. No other individual is identified. In 1916 the city directory listed the property as vacant. Behind the bar hangs a sign with the wording "Oysters Upstairs" which according to Rand Dotson in " Roanoke, Virginia, 1882 - 1912 Magic City of the New South" indicates an upper- floor bordello.

9. City Hotel - A black and white photograph of the City Hotel, built in 1886 and located on the southeast corner of Jefferson Street and Salem Avenue in Roanoke, Virginia. It was four-story building with store rooms on the ground floor and hotel rooms on the upper floors. In later years it was known as the Bear Building.

10. Dillards Liquor Store - Interior of Dillards Liquor Store. In 1907 the business was located at 110 Salem Avenue SE. Interior shows three men behind counters with shelves stocked with liquor bottles, a row of wooden casks with spigots, and several pottery jugs. There is a pot bellied stove in the center with barrels for seating beside it. The building has a tin ceiling.

Other businesses and buildings shown include the 25 Cent Store, Peoples Drug Store, Kress Company building and Hotel Patrick Henry sign. 14. Exterior photograph of Cafe Astor - A black and white photograph of Cafe Astor, an eating establishment located at 19 E. Salem Avenue. It was operated by Geo. Ziompolas. Ace Hardware Co. occupied the adjacent building to the east. A Buick and a Studebaker are parked in front of the restaurant and several men and a woman wearing hats occupy the sidewalk. One of the men places a ladder against the restaurant building.

First National Bank - A black and white photograph of the interior of the First National Bank, located on the southwest corner of Jefferson Street and Campbell Avenue in Roanoke, Virginia, taken prior to remodeling in 1924. A small sign on the customer service counter reads "We make loans to individuals in all walks of life". First National Bank, circa 1910 - A black and white photograph of the First National Bank, taken circa 1910, at 101 South Jefferson Street (at the southwest corner of intersection of Jefferson Street and Salem Avenue) in Roanoke, Virginia. It was erected after the plans of Norfolk architect John Kevan Peebles. Following its completion in 1910, the granite and buff-colored-brick, seven-story building was called in a contemporary newspaper account a "Temple of Finance" in the "French Renaissance" style .This building was also known as the People's Federal Building and the Liberty Trust Company.
