   The double tanks at Buena Vista, Virginia, on the Shenandoah Division, had been constructed to permit watering two locomotives and double-headed trains simultaneously; they were an unusual landmark on the line. The locomotive is Y6 #2172.

4. Archie Stover, Crossing Watchman. - Archie Stover sat up in the little elevated crossing watchman's shanty in the background during weekdays while local mixed freight Train Nos. 13 and 14 switched freight cars on the tracks nearby. Because they moved across Cave Street behind Stover so frequently, a watchman was required to lower the gates manually as the freights approached. At night the gates were operated automatically. Freight No. 51, with a Class Y6 at the head end is passing in the background. Variation of NW815. Freight train passing in background from right to left, away from camera.

5. A Shenandoah Memory: Finney and Fans on the Shenandoah Line - November - December 1997

   Article in The Arrow magazine (published by the N & W Historical Society) about the author's recollections of a trip home from college on the Shenandoah Valley line and the penchant for one engineer for fast running. Years later the author found a reference to and a picture of the engineer in "Steam, Steel, and Stars."

6. A summer's evening with Train No. 2. - On July 31, 1955, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lugar entertained Mr. B. A. Fitzgerald (center) at their home in Lithia, Virginia, on the tracks of the N&W's Shenandoah Division. Mr. Fitzgerald, 81 at the time, was a retired section foreman who had worked for the N&W for 48 years. The Lugars were retired farmers, and Link was much impressed with the fact that Mr. Lugar, 88 years old when the photo was made, had 10 children and had remarried when he was 70. The sky is still a bit light this summer evening, as Train No. 2, northbound to Hagerstown, Maryland and on to New York City, was due through Lithia before 8 P.M.

11. Bobby Goggin at Fringer's Mill. - Bobby Goggin at Fringer's Mill. Winston Link posed Bobby Goggin, a lad from Lithia, with one of Link's Coleman mantle lanterns which might have been bright enough not to require a flashbulb inside the globe. The derelict mill, with its rusty iron water wheel appealed to Link's fascination with old machinery, and Goggin and his lantern add the usual note of human vitality. In the background, a Class Y6 is pushing a northbound time freight to Lofton, Virginia in early April 1956.

12. Botetourt Up Close: They remember the days he shot those pictures - July 11, 2001

    Article published in the Fincastle Herald on July 11, 2001. Subtitled "They remember the days he shot those pictures so many years ago, and remain among Link's Legion", the article describes the memories of Botetourt residents from the time Mr. Link took photographs in the area. It was published a few months after Mr. Link's death in early 2001.

13. Boy, horse, and locomotive on Bridge 425. - A kid is struggling to pull a horse through the stream as locomotive No. 2179 passes overhead on bridge 425 in Arcadia, Virginia. Winston Link photographed at Bridge 425 on the N&W's Shenandoah Division on at least two occasions. This is a photograph he never published, and which may have been printed only once during his lifetime. It was discovered among his negatives shortly before his death by Mary L. Bachmann, Link's assistant and printer, who made a few prints which he signed. It is among the rarest of Link's signed photos. One doesn't know if Link asked the boy and his spirited horse to pose, or if they just happened to be nearby and he maneuvered them into the photo as Class Y6b locomotive 2179 thundered overhead.

17. Cherry logs and a Class Y6 Locomotive at the Fitzgerald Lumber Company. - First 51, a scheduled freight train operating between Hagerstown, Maryland and Roanoke, Virginia, is passing a stack of huge logs in the yards of the Fitzgerald Lumber Company in Buena Vista, Virginia. While waiting for trains on this cold night in March 1956, Winston Link counted the rings on one of the two massive cherry logs in the center of the pile. He recalled with amazement that the tree was more than 300 years old and wondered how it had lasted as long as it did before being cut. 3/25th, 26th, 1956.

20. Class Y6B Locomotive 2172 at the Twin Tanks in Buena Vista. - A normal lens, horizontal, showing both tanks at Buena Vista and with the water plug at the left. Winston Link spotted the N&W's twin water tanks in Buena Vista, Virginia early in the project, and came to photograph them in March 1956. Link was told that two tanks had been constructed to speed the watering of doubleheaded trains because having twin tanks made it possible to fill the tenders of both locomotives simultaneously. Although this site was within the city limits of Buena Vista, it was known to railroaders by the intriguing name of "Loch Laird." This was the site of one of Link's most ambitious mutiple camera setups. Three cameras using lenses of two different focal lengths were set up alongside the tracks, but not right next to each other. This image uses a lens of normal focal lengh while another used a wide angle lens. Link was fascinated and amused to see that the railroad had used leftover rails as the support of the bottom of the water tanks.
