Constructing the Railroad Siding - Eight men and a small boy work along side a steam powered shovel which is being used to construct a railroad siding where box cars, hopper or gondola cars were stored prior to being loaded with the processed manganese ore from the mines on Flat Creek Farm located 2.5 miles east of Evington in Campbell County, Virginia. The main line of the Southern Railroad is in the background and a power line runs overhead. Newly installed rails and crossties can be seen to the front and rear of the shovel car. Several large boulders, underbrush and grass are in the foreground.

Class J locomotives pulling through passenger trains westbound were serviced there after handing their trains to the diesels of the Southern Railway
