From the Roanoke City directories, it appears the original owners of the house were James H. Gibboney and his wife, Hattie. Mr. Gibboney was the chief chemist for the Norfolk & Western Railroad Company. Around 1969, Alan Calmes took possession of the house. Mr. Calmes was associate professor of history at Roanoke College, Salem, Virginia, from 1968–1974.
