5. Chemical Warfare Service Officer Candidate School Yearbook - 1943

   Officer Candidate School yearbook for the Chemical Warfare Service, located in Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. The book contains autographs of those that attended the school, a group photograph, as well as the happenings around the base. The group meet from April 26-Juy 24, 1943, and were part of the Company "A," 5th Platoon. Stashed between the pages was a folded 'Over There' music sheet (2020.26.20.2).

6. First public school in Roanoke - Children stand in fron tof a brick building with 2 windows. Girls are sitting in chairs on the first two rows and the boys are standing in the back two rows on risers of some sort. The tearcher is at the left edge, second row from the top. The two girls in the center front fow hold a sign, which says Roanoke [illegible]. On the reverse is written the following: First public school house in Roanoke City, Virginia. This was hat was known as the old Fishburn Tobacco Factory, located on the south west corner of Campbell Avenue and Commerce (Second) Street SW., approximately where the Times World Building is now. My mother Kitty (Kate) Marguerite Mills Ledbetter was about seven or eight years old at the time theis picture was made.l She is the third from the left in the second row from the bottom. Annie May Ledbetter Downs My mother was the daughter of Pleasant Wiley Mills and Ann Eliza Wetrtz. He was a Civil War Confederate Veteran. As my mother was born in 1877, this picture must have been made in 1884 or 1885. 11-4-1967

7. Former home of Salem Improvement Co - A black and white photograph of the former building of Salem Improvement Company, which was across from Andrew Lewis Middle School on College Avenue. The building was razed in the mid-1960s. The three story building has some gothic and Morrocan influence. The road in the immediate foreground is not paved, but a bumpy dirt road. Two cars, from the mid1910s, are at the edge of the image at left.

9. Hotel Salem - A black and white photograph of Hotel Salem, a "boom" landmark on the corner of College Avenue and 4th St. This is now the site of Andrew Lewis Middle School. A Lutheran orphanage occupied this building until it was razed in 1932.

The photograph has been glued into a card enclosure, with a lithograph print on the textured front. It reads: School Days / school days - Dear old golden rule days/ reading and writing / and 2+2= 'rithmetic - Taught to the tune of a hickory stick / I was your bashful, barefoot beau - you were my queen in calico - You wrote on your slate when we were a couple of kids! Images on the front include a small school house, a book, switch, pen in hand, a boy and a girl at a fence post, and a chalkboard that reads 'I love you so.' The entire image is surrounded by a stave of musical notes. The photograph is of several boys in button up shirts and girls in dresses, all seated at their desks. The back wall is brick, and decorated with drawings from the students in the class. The right side of the room is covered in windows. The teacher sits at the back of the class.

    Handwritten copy of a letter, dated April 5, 1859, written on C. Richardson & Son Groceries and Provisions letterhead, Philadelphia. The store was located at the S.E. corner of Eighth and Berks Streets. The letter is written from a nephew to his uncle (Joseph Reigle to [assumed] Charles Richardson, detailing the death of their mother, and apologizing for the delay in writing, as there was no excuse.
