First Easter Service, Highland Park, 1928 |
Description |
A black and white photograph of the first Easter service held in Highland Park in April 1928, organized and sponsored by Altrusa Club of Roanoke, Virginia. Altrusa has the honor of being called "the pioneer of women’s service clubs", first established in 1917. The name "Altrusa" is a combination of the first letters of "altruism", service to others to which this new club was committed, plus "USA" for patriotism, inasmuch as World War I was a major national issue. "Patriotism, Efficiency, Service" was appropriately chosen as the motto. |
