Image #1 is a photograph of the Roanoke High School football team in 1914. Mill Mountain and Roanoke Hospital (Roanoke Memorial Hospital) as well as the bridges crossing the Roanoke River can be seen in the background. The area was known for years as the "fairgrounds" as this was the venue for traveling fairs and circuses. This photograph also appears in the 1915 "Acorns of Roanoke", the school's yearbook. Handwritten notes setting forth the season schedule and scores on the reverse of the photograph mat are shown in image #2. Based on a review of the 1915 yearbook the team consisted of Howard Gibbons, left end, Robert Nelson, left tackle, Frank Helvestine, Jr., left guard, Harry Rosenbaum, center, Garth Clifford Boyer, right guard, Clay Starkey, right tackle, Warren Hobbie, right end, Lawrence Jennings, quarterback, Charles Shubert, left halfback, David Matson, fullback and captain, and George Engleby, right halfback. Roanoke High School was the predecessor of Jefferson High School. |
