Royal Brake |
Description |
Photograph of a coal car which was manufactured at the facilities of Virginia Bridge & Iron Co. in Roanoke, Virginia. The company was acquired by American Bridge Company of New York, a subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation, in 1936. In the 1929 city directory for the City of Roanoke the company advertised "steel bridges, buildings, etc". The handwritten note on the reverse of the photograph sets forth the camera settings together with the phrases "coal car", "royal brake", and"Virginia Bridge & Iron Works". The wheel at the top of the car and vertical chain shown in the photograph are a part of the Roya brandl brake regulator which takes up the slack in the brake rigging as the brake shoes wear and become thinner. |
