Church Avenue 1925 |
Description |
Church Avenue,Roanoke, Virginia, looking East from the intersection of Second (Commerce) Street circa 1925.Green Memorial Methodist Church is seen on the Southeast corner and is still operating today (2014). The YMCA located on the Northeast corner operated at that site until 1961-1962 when the building was demolished and the "Y" was relocated to the 400 block of Church Avenue. It appears parking was allowed only on the South side of this block street in 1925 and reverted to parking both sides between First and Jefferson Street. Streetcar tracks and associated wires are visible on Second Street. Traffic lights were located over the center of the intersection in 1925. They were later moved to the four corners in the late thirties or early forties. |
