Title |
Buck Stewart calling the train, Roanoke Passenger Station. |
Description |
Buck Stewart calling trains, Roanoke Station; two women in background, negative envelope says, "two girls are sisters, see NW1119," no dates Harry T. "Buck" Stewart worked for the railroad for decades. Winston Link recalled that Stewart had earlier been employed on a maintenance of way crew where he had been injured, and was subsequently reassigned to the less strenuous task of announcing the trains at the N&W's modern Roanoke passenger station. Link described Stewart as having an inimitable way of calling trains in a voice which was a combination of gravel and southern drawl. The hard surfaces of the building produced so many echoes that Stewart had learned to pace his announcements slowly enough so that the name of every destination town he called would be clearly understood. In this photo, he is sween standing in the passenger concourse which extended from the present station out over the tracks below. This was demolished in 1992 to permit higher freight loads to pass through the city. |
