Title |
Ghost Train --Time Freight No. 83, Westbound, over Bridge Five. |
Description |
The ghost train. Time freight, 83, westbound from Norfolk, having passed over bridge 5. This photograph was an experiment which, for almost 30 years, Winston Link considered to be a failure. It was photographed in the fall of 1955 at Bridge 5 over the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Virginia. Link made a three-minute time exposure in an effort to include the huge Reeve Avenue generating plant of the Virginia Electric Power Company (VEPCO), in the far distance. He then fired the flashbulbs when time freight No. 83 crossed the bridge. He considered the lights shining through the bulk of the engine to be unsuccessful unitl he was reminded of this and its companion photo, Ghost Train--Passenger, (NW420A), when The Chrysler Museum in Norfolk gave the title Ghost Trains to Link's exhibition held there in 1983. The two "ghost" photos were used on the cover of the catalogue for that exhibition. |
