Ole Monterey Golf Course |
Description |
A black and white aerial photograph of Ole Monterey Golf Club taken circa 1930. The golf course is a part of the property formerly owned by William Fleming, a colonial figure of considerable prominence in the Roanoke Valley. The fairways, sand traps, and greens can be made out on a close inspection of the photograph. Tinker Creek runs from left to right through the property along the lower edge of the golf course. Monterey, one of the finest antebellum homes in the area, lies in a grove of trees to the right of the golf course. Legend has it that during the Civil War several Yankee soldiers were killed while attempting to steal horses from the plantation and were secretly buried in unmarked graves behind the residence. |
