New Jefferson Theatre, circa 1919 |
Description |
A black and white photograph of the interior of the new Jefferson Theater located on South Jefferson Street at the intersection with Luck Avenue, S.W., in Roanoke, Virginia. This photograph was taken circa 1919. The following is taken from "History of The City of Roanoke" by Raymond P. Barnes -- the year is 1910: "The Jefferson Theatre located on the north west corner of Jefferson and Luck gave its first presentation with a short movie followed by Vaudeville acts on Easter Monday, under the management of J. Schwartz. (As the years passed the Jefferson often served stock companies which presented plays, but was finally devoted to moving pictures exclusively)." In the year 1915: "A company featuring the new, improved type of motion pictures, 'Paramount' took over the Jefferson theatre and changed its name to 'Paramount'. A tremendous advance has been made in the moving pictures industry." In the year 1919: "The Jefferson Theatre was being remodeled. " (Perhaps this is why the description uses the term "new" Jefferson Theatre?) The Jefferson Theatre was razed in 1977. |
