Image #1 is a photograph of the state champion Roanoke High School football team in 1913. Mill Mountain and Roanoke Hospital (Roanoke Memorial Hospital) as well as the bridges crossing the Roanoke River can be seen in the background. The area was known for years as the "fairgrounds" as this was the venue for traveling fairs and circuses. This photograph also appears in the 1914 "Acorns of Roanoke", the school's yearbook. Handwritten notes setting forth the season schedule and scores on the reverse of the photograph mat are shown in image #2. Based on the notes and a review of the 1914 yearbook the team consisted of Sidney Spangler, left end, Clay Starkey, left tackle, Moss Noell, left guard, Frank Helvestine, center, Horace Wall, right guard, Allen Gibbons, right tackle, Warren "Pig"Hobbie, right end, Joe Engleby, quarterback and captain, George Engleby, left halfback, David Matson, fullback, and Tom Divers, right halfback. Substitutes were H. Bottomley, C. Schubert, B. Boyer, N. Webster, and J. Wright. Roanoke High School was the predecessor of Jefferson High School. |
