Lakeside Thrill Roller Coaster |
Description |
A black and white photograph of the roller coaster 'Thriller' at Lakeside Amusement Park, taken in the 1920s. The roller coaster was wooden, and a sign posted on the side of the scaffolding of the roller coaster reads "For a real thrill ride the THRILLER. For material for a real home - see EXCHANGE LUMBER CO." Lakeside opened in 1920 and was located in Salem, Virginia at the intersection of U.S. Route 460 (East Main Street in Salem) and State Route 419 (Electric Road in Salem). The original Lakeside charter called for the pool, athletic fields, and a planned hotel. No mention was made of rides. Yet within a few years, Lakeside had added a "Twirl-around" (Ferris wheel), "Lindy Planes" (named for heroic aviator Charles Lindbergh), pony rides, and other attractions. Probably most popular was a roller coaster known successively as the Thriller, Mountain Speedway, and the Wildcat. |
