A photo taken from the new Franklin Road Bridge over the Virginian Railroad tracks and train make-up yard. Rail cars loaded with coal as well as empty coal cars are seen to the left of the photo. Several passenger cars are seen in the upper right quadrant of the photo as well as several small unidentified tracked vehicles to the left, right sides of the photo as well as one at the top of the inclined tracks. One yard shifter steam locomotive with crew is seen in the center of the photo. This Virginian yard was located on south Jefferson street on the east and reserve avenue on the south. The old Roanoke city mills can be seen with its grain silos in the distance.The Virginian Railroad merged with the Norfolk & Western Railroad 1959. |
