A black and white photograph of Mattie Louise Hancock (later Mrs. Basil D. Warren) at the age of 16 months (circa 1918) in front of her home at 331 Church Avenue in Roanoke, Virginia. She is dressed in a child's version of a Red Cross nurse's uniform. Her doll is dressed as a World War I infantryman and his head is bandaged. The doll is lying on a pillow and she is caring for him. The inscription on the back of the photograph indicates that she is tending to a "soldier" who was wounded in France. |
