Can of Dr Pepper, Heartland Collector Series, Vol. 4 |
Description |
An unopened 12 oz can of Dr Pepper, volume 4 of the "Heartland Collector Series", wrapped in cellophane. The back of the can has an image of John William "Bill" Davis in front of the Roanoke bottling plant (which was located on McClanahan Street, near Franklin Road) and the following text: "In 1936, Bill Davis brought Dr Pepper to Virginia and thank goodness he did. He left Texas and moved his family to Roanoke where he borrowed money to start Virginia's first Dr Pepper bottling plant. Through hard work and determination, he was able to repay the entire loan in one year. His successful marketing programs such as the "Silver Dollar Man" and the idea of serving heated Dr Pepper drove Roanoke's Dr Pepper sales to record proportions. From 1957-1959 and again in 1961, Roanoke led the world in Dr Pepper per capita consumption. Davis went on to own Dr Pepper plants in Lynchburg, Staunton, Danville, and Norfolk. He served on the board of directors at Dr Pepper for twenty years and was inducted into the Beverage World Hall of Fame for his contributions to the soft drink industry. Recipient of the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans, Bill Davis left us a lasting legacy. Today Roanoke remains one of the top Dr Pepper markets in the country. Thank you, Bill!" |
