"Peacock Smoking Tobacco" manufactured by R. H. Fishburne Tobacco Company, Roanoke, Virginia. According to "The History of the City of Roanoke" by Raymond P. Barnes, the tobacco factory was purchased from Isham M. Ferguson by Tipton T. Fishburne and his two brothers, Reuben H. and Robert Fishburne. According to "The History of Roanoke County The History of Roanoke City and History of the Norfolk and Western Railway Company" by George S. Jack and E. B. Jacobs, the Fishburne brothers purchased the tobacco company in 1873 and acquired additional holdings in the tobacco business in 1879 which went under the name of Fishburne Brothers and Company. (See page 168). The Fishburne brothers continued the business for an additional 16 years manufacturing only high grade smoking tobacco until the year 1905 when R. H. Fishburne retired from active business life. (See page 174). |
