Confederate States of America War Bond |
Description |
Confederate States of America bond in the amount of $1,000.00. This bond was issued on May 1,1861 by the Confederate States of America, with a maturation date of 1871. Revenue to support repayment of the bond would be derived from a tax on raw cotton exported from the Confederate States of America at a rate of 1/8 of one cent per pound of cotton. The top portion of the bond includes all of the terms and conditions of this financial instrument. The bottom portion, which is sectioned off into fifteen, $40.00 coupons signed by T. Ellett, that were to be turned in for interest payments ending in 1871. Coupons with maturity dates prior to September 1, 1864 are no longer attached, and are assumed to have been removed and redeemed. This bond measures 14 1/2" by 14 1/2" framed, is made from paper, and is in excellent condition. The frame appears to be of a later vintage than the bond. |
