Cast-iron Footed Serving Bowl |
Description |
Footed serving bowl, ca.1810. This cast iron bowl was made at "Speedwell", the Harvey family plantation, where an iron furnace was operated from 1800 to 1825, in the Starkey area of what is now Roanoke County. "Speedwell" was named for the ship in which an ancestor of the Harveys immigrated to America. Cast iron was favored for use by frontiersmen, slaves, and indentured servants due to its sturdiness. |
