Iron Kettle |
Description |
Cast iron pot, with raised letters and an anchor on the side: "No. 8 5 GALL., NORTH. CHASE & NORTH, PHILADELPHIA". The brim of the pot angles outwards and has at opposite ends a pair of carrying handles. One handle is centered on the inscription above, and below the other handle is a raised letter, "H". The sides of the round pot are curved and have three raised bands. The bottom of the pot has three "V" shaped feet. The pot is in the form of a miniature Triworks pot, typically found on whale ships. (MI-567) Note: In 1862, NORTH CHASE & NORTH was listed in the directory as an iron foundry at 209 North Second Street, Philadelphia. There were three owners, one being Gibbson North. North was listed in 1850 as being a stove maker operating at 390 North High Street, Phuiladelphia. The name of his firm then was, "NORTH HARRISON & CO." The pot also has an iron lid. |
