  5. Wooden Ruler with Newspaper-column Measurements - Wooden ruler with measurements indicating the width of newspaper columns. 20th century, American. The ruler has a straightedge made of brass. One side of the ruler has 18 one-inch increments printed in black ink. The following is also printed: "THE ROANOKE TIMES, NEWS COVERAGE AROUND THE CLOCK, THE ROANOKE WORLD-NEWS." In addition, the following is in small print: "J. Berna, Sales Co. Roanoke, Va." The reverse of the ruler has 8 column sized increments printed at the edge in black with the following printed: "RULE OFF NUMBER OF COLUMNS STARTING FROM EXTREME LEFT." On the opposite edge, pica increments are numbered 6, then 1l2 through 10l8. Also printed on this side are: "THE ROANOKE TIMES, STANDARD ANPA AND THE ROANOKE TIMES, THE ROANOKE WORLD-NEWS COLUMN MEASUREMENTS, THE TOTAL SELLING MEDIUM IS THE DAILY NEWSPAPER, THE ROANOKE WORLD-NEWS."

  14. Wooden Zither with Wooden Pick - This American-made musical instrument is a zither. Wooden zithers such as this one were common in Germany and Austria. Forerunners of the Appalachian, or mountain, dulcimer, they were also popular in many American households and offered early settlers a very portable form of musical entertainment. Was found in the now demolished Garst cabin along Garst Mill Road in Roanoke County.
