3. 1915 Roanoke street scene - Picture of George Davis's car. Davis was commissioned by Edward Stone (founder of Stone Printing) to document the poor condition of Roanoke streets in 1915. Davis usually photographed his car in the street scenes that Mr. Stone later presented to Roanoke City Council.

Acceptance of the Comprehensive Plan for the City of Roanoke - Image #1 is a black and white photograph of members of the City Council of the City of Roanoke, Virginia, together with the city Planning and Zoning Commissioners and others at a meeting held on May 20, 1929 when the Comprehensive City Plan prepared by John Nolen was accepted. The plan dealt with future land use in the City of Roanoke. Maps of the City of Roanoke are displayed in the background. Image #2 being the reverse of the photograph sets forth a somewhat confusing description of the seating arrangement of those present. Mayor Charles D. Fox sits directly under the clock at the head of the table. City Manager W.P. Hunter sits at the near left corner of the table.

6. Administration building at Catawba Sanatorium - Exterior view of the administration building at Catawba Sanatorium located in Catawba, Virginia, several miles north of Salem, Virginia. The date "1927" appears on the image.The sanatorium opened on the grounds of the former Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs resort in 1909 with a total of 16 patients. An existing resort structure probably met administrative needs until this more modern and functional building was constructed. According to an article by Melville Carrico published in the Roanoke Times around 1937 the tuberculosis facility was housing and treating 350 patients.

7. Alleghany Institute Baseball Team - Black and white photograph of the Alleghany Institute baseball team for the year1898. Handwritten notes on the reverse of the photograph identify the player seated on the floor as Walter Engleby, outfielder. In the second row the player on the left is identified as one of the Handy brothers "who owned school - taught school and played on the football and baseball teams". In the back row the player on the left holding the baseball is unidentified. The next two players are identified in order as Corbin Glass and Bill Peck. The next player is identified as Earnest Simpson with a question mark. According to Raymond Barnes' "A History of the City of Roanoke", Alleghany Institute opened in September,1886, and by 1898 was located in the former home of Erasmus H. Stewart on Jefferson Street where the barn and carriage house were converted into classrooms. In the mid 1890s A. Kingman Handy and S. Spieden Handy were involved in the operation of the school according to the City Directory of the City of Roanoke

13. American Viscose Corporation's Parade Float - A black and white photograph of the American Viscose Corporation's decorated float in a parade. There are six young ladies standing or seated on the float. Miss Desmond Byrd Miller is second from the right. American Viscose opened a large rayon plant in Southeast Roanoke in October 1917. It was located at the end of 9th Street, SE. This plant closed in 1958.

18. Brauer Chapel at Catawba Sanatorium - Photograph of the Brauer Chapel located on the grounds of Catawba Sanatorium, a few miles north of Salem, Virginia. The chapel was built at a cost of $8,000 and dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 23, 1916. It is named in honor of Charles E. Brauer, a Richmond, Virginia, barber, who contracted tuberculosis, was treated at Catawba, and while there organized both the Sunday School program and the campaign that raised the funds for construction of the chapel. The chapel is constructed of local stone and features gothic style windows and doors and a slate roof. The sanatorium is located on the former Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs resort property a few miles north of Salem, Virginia.

19. Building at Catawba Sanatorium - Exterior view of a two story building at Catawba Sanatorium located in Catawba, Virginia, several miles north of Salem, Virginia. The tall windows along the side would have allowed fresh air and sunshine, major elements in the treatment of tuberculosis at the time, to penetrate the building. The development of anti-bacterial drugs in the 1940s altered the treatment of the disease, and in 1972, after the facility at Catawba had treated over 25,000 patients, it was converted to a mental health facility. in this photograph the shadow of the photographer, George Davis, and his camera equipment are prominent in the photograph. The land on which the sanatorium stood was formerly a resort known as Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs. A portion of the information in this description comes from an article by Melville Carrico, staff writer for the Roanoke Times, published circa 1937.

20. Campbell Avenue intersection with Randolph Street -1915 - Photo of Randolph street looking north at the intersection with Campbell Avenue. Picture is another of George Davis's series depicting the poor conditions of Roanoke streets. The series was comissioned by Edward L. Stone of Stone Printing company. Building on SW corner houses the Roanoke Railway and Mill Mountain incline companies. On the NW corner is the Hotel Shenandoah which became the Hotel Lee in later years folowed by the name change to Hotel Earle. On the NE corner is the Randolph Street Market and Foss-Shneider Brewing Company next door to the So Weighing and Inspection Bureau & N&W Freight Depot. Potholes are visible on dirt portion of Randolph street and the streetcar tracks on the paved north portion of Randolph. George Daviis's Buick coupe can be seen parked by the Roanoke Railway Company building.
