2. Elks Club - Picture of the three story Elks Club at Tazwell Avenue and Jefferson Street in Roanoke, Virginia just before being demolished. There was an addition to the building on the left side of the building. "BPOE" (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) sign on the building identifying it as the Elks Club. There is a late 1960's or early 1970's Dodge Rambler in the photo.The original stone wall was replaced by a brick wall. There is a sign posted - Demolition by D.H. Griffin, Wrecking Co., Greensboro, N.C.

3. Gilmer Elementary School - A black and white photograph of the Gilmer Elementary School, an African American school in northeast Roanoke. The school was razed in 1965 as part of a redevelopment program.

5. Jefferson High School cornerstone - Laying of the cornerstone for Jefferson High School. A platform has been built next to wooden construction, and is decorated with a blue and white star skirt. Spectators stand below at the left of the image. Several men in suits stand in a line toward the back of the platform, behind the construction of a brick wall, while others, both men and women sit in chairs in front of the brick wall, still on the platform. Several trees surround the site, and a house sits directly in the background.

Attached to the bottom of the image is a typed explanation: Looking across 1st St. (now 22nd St) street car tracks, unpaved road and home of R.H. 7. Removal of Streetcar Rails and Ties, 1948 - A black and white photograph of a workman and his truck, taken in 1948 at the base of Mill Mountain, between Hamilton Terrace and Belleview Avenue (near Roanoke Memorial Hospital). The man is removing the streetcar rails and ties because busses have replaced the streetcars for transportation. The rails and ties can be seen in the background, behind his truck.

9. Roanoke City Farm, 1946 - A black and white photograph of a view across part of Roanoke City Farm, showing the Pest House, built to isolate and treat victims of the dreaded smallpox. Also visible on the left is a tenant's house, which burned about 1959. An unidentified building is at the extreme left. When this photograph was taken in April 1946, preparations were being made for temporary housing for returning GI's from World War II. The City Farm and Pest House were located on what was called "Poor House Road", now Colonial Avenue.

10. Roanoke City Farm, 1946 - A black and white photograph of a view of the old Roanoke City Farm, taken in April 1946. Grading for temporary housing for World War II veterans is in progress. The Old Pest House, which once housed smallpox victims, is on top of hill. This photograph was taken by R. H. Ragland.

11. Rockledge Inn, 1953 - A black and white photograph of Roanoke City Farm in the summer of 1965. Later this site was donated to V.P.I. Technical Institute, who built on the right side, and later, became Virginia Western Community College with buildings on both sides of Colonial Avenue. Phot was made from home of R. H. Ragland at 3201 Pasley Ave, S. W. Mill Mountain can be seen at the right.

12. Rockledge Inn, 1953 - A black and white photograph of the Rockledge Inn on Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia, taken in 1953, before its conversion into a theater. The view is toward South Roanoke. The hipped roof and chimney with window and fanlight are above the wraparound porch with wood railing.

13. W.S. McClanahan House - A black and white photograph of the house of W.S. McClanahan, taken in winter. The house sits behind bare trees, and has a car portico attached to the front of the house. The columns are covered in ivy. House stood at the corner of Crystal Spring Ave & McClanahan St., South Roanoke.
