On letterhead marked "Thompson W. Goodwin, Roanoke, Virginia," this item is a letter to Mr. S. H. McVitty of Salem enclosing an 1862 Roanoke County note for fifty cents. There seems to be a jovial remark concerning Henry Anderson to the effect of "buying a quart."The signature is that of T. W. Goodwin, however, a note at the bottom of the page says,"list as gift from S. H. McVitty through E. P. Goodwin." See related Object ID 1963.16.6.a.

The letter (a) is written on Margaret Lynn Lewis Chapter of the DAR stationery and give the history of the enclosed piece of linen (c), which the sender identified as a 'nice soft wash rag' and was made from the last of her mother's linens sheets, made from her trusseau when she married in 1832.
