J.E.L., Jr., gives Bernard a series of names, what units they were attached to, and some of their actions. J.V.L. McCreery was a sergeant in the 1st Company of the Richmond Howitzers. He says that the artillery supported by Mahone's Brigade on May 2nd, 1863, was Manly's North Carolina Battery, commanded by Captain Manly (Manly was the son of an ex-governor of N.C.), the 1st Co. of the Richmond Howitzers, commanded by Capt. 3. Jno. Laughton Letter - May 1892

The note seems to be an addition to the May 23, 1892 note that refers to a list of killed and wounded, sent separately. Laughton says the list of killed and wounded pertains to a period of the war, but many of the wounded had been injured in other engagements. He did not include a list of prisoners, or of soldiers who died of disease, or a description of the wounds. Laughton thought that not necessary to Bernard's purpose, but it is available,...

  4. John E. Laughton April 13, 1892 letter - April 13, 1892

A brief note from Laughton to Bernard informs that he has enclosed a statement that he received from Jim Phillips. He says that Dick Davis is mistaken on the placement of the Sharp Shooters. On the day in question they were on the right wing of the 6th Virginia regiment and on the extreme right. Their loss was due to their exposed position. The sharpshooters were always in front on a flank of the Brigade.

  5. John E. Laughton April 2,1892 letter - April 2, 1892

A brief note by Laughton to Bernard indicates that Laughton is satisfied with the condensation of his memoranda, and has nothing to add. He indicates that a man named Phillips does not seem satisfied with Bernard's legal brief, and that Phillips will write to Bernard about it.

  6. John E. Laughton Jr. Postcard - May 25, 1892

Postcard sent to George Bernard states that it was received without a date but postmarked May 25. Mr. Laughton states that the postcard is so horribly written that he cannot decipher it. He is willing to give Bernard any information he can as long as he knows just what Bernard desires. He asks Bernard to rewrite the card in a more legible manner.

  7. John E. Laughton letter of June 14, 1892 - June 14, 1892

Laughton has sent Bernard a copy of Keileys "Prisoner of War" and asks Bernard not to lose it as he can not get another copy. He also sent a copy of the A. P. Hill Monument souvenir, which contains pictures he supposes Bernard will use in his book. Laughton then discusses costs of printing (cuts), the paper and a photograph. He believes this has answered what was asked of him.

  8. John E. Laughton letter of June 20, 1892 - June 20, 1892

Note from Laughton to Bernard explaining the situation of the Richmond Howitzers. The First (1st) Company of Richmond Howitzers was the battery engaged with Mahone's Brigade at Chancellorsville. The 2nd and 3rd Companies were attached to Jackson's Corps and never connected with either Anderson's Division or A. P. Hill's Corps. The companies were separated at the start of the war, and assigned to different Corps, and never re-united in the same...

  9. John E. Laughton Letter of June 22, 1892 - June 22, 1892

Laughton is referring to past correspondence from Bernard and is responding to questions asked. The battery was the First Company of the Richmond Howitzers and the Sergeant was Joseph Van Lew McCreery. 1. Laughton doesn't know which was the engagement (May 1 or 2) where Macon Martin was wounded; Bernard's diary would be more reliable. 2. Laughton's list includes names that McCreery had reported. He (Laughton) did not mention the names as he ...

  11. John E. Laughton May 18, 1893 letter - May 18, 1893

Laughton says that he forgot to mention that he had received from Jenkins & Walthall 2 cases (359 copies) of "War Talks". These have been placed in Mr. Valentine's Storage Department, and Laughton thinks Bernard should get an insurance policy on them. He also wants to repeat the suggestion that Bernard advertise in all the Richmond papers during the Davis Memorial Celebration, and let it be known copies may be bought from the bookstores. Laughton...

  13. John E. Laughton May 23, 1892 letter - May 23, 1892

A note from Laughton to Bernard informs him that the enclosed list of killed and wounded among the Richmond Grays during the war was from the company record book. Though Bernard seems to have wanted a partial list, Laughton thought he might have use for a complete list. Laughton asks whether the Bernard book is sold by subscription, and whether he might be able to get some from Richmond.

  14. John E. Laughton (No date) letter - 1892

Page one is missing. Laughton states that he had no idea a certain publication existed, and so there were no calls for it (something by Bernard). A Mr. English had never had a call for it either, and had on hand the same number of copies that West Johnston & Co. had sent. Laughton advises Bernard to advertise the work and let the public know where to buy it as he cannot see how else it can be sold. Also the larger number of the pamphlets th...

Laughton informs Bernard that he has not yet seen Mr. Cahill, but has left a letter at his office asking for a statement showing the number of copies sold, the quantity on hand, and a check for the net balance. On another matter (The Crater), his recollection is clear that Wright's Brigade was coming through the covered way, and had commenced the formation of their line. The line connected with the Sharp Shooters on the extreme right of the V...

Laughton informs Bernard that he has seen Colonel Jones of the 1st Regiment, who said that the Chicago Exhibit was only a matter under consideration. It would be a matter of months before any plans would be decided upon, and probably not this winter. Laughton states that Mr. A. C. Becker, the superintendent of the Union News Company, will take 50 copies on commission at 50 cents each, and will take more if needed. Mr. Becker said that this is ...

  17. John E. Laughton October 6, 1892 letter - October 6, 1892

Laughton informs Bernard that a receipt from a Mr. Cahill is enclosed. The receipt is for a case of pamphlets which Mr. Cahill accepted without opening the box or counting the number of copies. Laughton sent him a letter form Fenn & Owen which said there were 1,000 copies. Laughton missed meeting Bernard because he did not read the post card in time as he got home late. The reverse of the letter is an advertisement for an auction company.

  18. John E. Laughton Postal Card - June 18, 1892

Laughton writes Bernard that he is referring to a list of casualties he had sent him, and that he may see if any of the Grays (Company in the12th Virginia) were injured May 2, 1863, as he (Laughton) has no way of knowing. He saw in an advertisement in the Rural Messenger that John E. Cook's books are selling at fifty cents a copy. Laughton fears that Bernard will have to reduce the price of his book. A Mr. Phillips agrees with the statement that ...

While in winter quarters near Gordonsville, Virginia, in 1864, General Mahone conceived the ide...
