1. Roanoke Vigilants, 1890 - A photocopy of a black and white photograph taken in April 1890 of the members of the Vigilant volunteer firemen of Roanoke's first fire station. There are black swags over the doors for the funeral of Mayor William Carr. The men are identified as (front row, left to right): Terry, Baugham, Wilson, Hesse, Swallenberg, Angell, Knepp, Duggan, Sisler, May, Peters, Wiley; (back row): T. Engleby, M. Harris, Shartzer, Shade, Peters, Cook, Poteet, Wingfield, McDermott, Story, Brooks, Wingfield, Whaling. The group is posed in front of the first Roanoke fire station on the corner of Kirk Avenue and Jefferson Street. The Roanoke Fire Department's history began in 1882 when the first firefighters were organized by the newly chartered City of Roanoke. The volunteer fire companies such as the Vigilants, Juniors, Friendship, and Alerts provided protection against fire for the city.

   R. W. Jones writes to Bernard that he has just read the "Rural Messenger" of May 28th. Reading the article "Maryland Campaign of 1862", written by Bernard, revived many memories. Jones is responding to the request, within the article, for soldiers to make corrections to any errors.
