The running of McConnell was instrumental to the victories according to the Roanoke Times. In an interview with the History Museum of Western Virginia on September 13, 2013 his team mate, John Hurt, Jr., described him as a hard runner who "carried the freight".

The photograph was taken in Wasena Park. John Hurt, Jr. who played on the team and did most of the play calling commented in an interview at the History Museum of Western Virginia in 2013 that the team was well coached on the fundamentals of the game and was also well practiced.
