1. 1918 Roanoke High School Football Team - Image #1 is a photograph of the Roanoke High School football team of 1918. The slope of Mill Mountain can be seen in the background. The field on which the players stand was known for years as the "fairgrounds" as this was the venue for traveling fairs and circuses. A similar photograph appears in the 1919 "Acorns of Roanoke", the school's yearbook. The small boy seated at the center of the photograph holds a football with white lettering which reads "1918 Champions". Handwritten notes regarding the names of some of the players are shown in image #2. Based on a review of the 1919 yearbook the starting team consisted of F. Surface, right end, George I. "Pop" Vogel, right tackle, Hodges, right guard, Ferguson, center, Watkins, left guard, Edgar "Munny" Howard, captain and left tackle, Percy McGhee, left end, Ernest Brown, left half back, Thomas, fullback, Keffer, right half back, and W. Price, quarterback. The 1918 season opened disasterously, most of the games being cancelled on account of the influenza epidemic. The team persisted and won the state championship without the benefit of a coach. The team repeated as state champions again in 1919.

   Letter headed Camp of Instruction, Tuesday Aug 13th 1861 from Gilmer Breckinridge to his wife Julia telling of events at the Camp of Instruction, of meeting with various people and traveling to Richmond, about purchasing a barrel of flour which he said would feed 4 men for 83 1/2 days, that officers had to pay for all their meals, of meeting Billie Pegram who "had run off from Baltimore, passed through the Federal pickets and found one asleep", r...

   This letter is overwritten, headed "Jan 26 1826" from an unknown friend (postmark is Lynchburg) of Emma W. Gilmer at Liberty, Bedford [Virginia] responding to a letter from Emma telling "there will be five brides here on Tuesday night", wedding plans, parties, dressing the brides, and implores "Emma and Queen" to come to Lynchburg to visit her soon. The writer names seven songs that she can now sing.
