10. Horton Livery Stable, 1890 - A black and white photograph of Horton Livery Stable, located in the vicinity of the southeast corner of the intersection of Kirk Avenue SW with First (formerly Henry) Street SW. The stable, operated by J.T. Corder until his death, was taken over in 1880 by W. H. "Billy" Horton who resided at "Nestlebrook" situated at the northwest corner of the intersection of 24th Street NW and the Salem Roanoke Turnpike. The business was later operated by W.H. Horton and John Roberts as Horton and Roberts Livery Stable. The Horton Building was erected at this location in 1894. As noted in the upper margin on the photograph, Mr. Charlie Harrison, Mr. High, and Frank Welch, Sr. are shown in the photograph along with other unidentified individuals, wagons, horses, and possibly ponies.

This was also known as W.H. Horton & Company. The reverse of the photo identifies the individuals (left to right) as Joe Blair, Uncle Sam Calloway, John M. Roberts in buggy (penciled notation identifies this man as Uncle W.H. Horton), Jim Casey, and Clarence Johnson.

Interior View of Roanoke Book and Stationery Company - A black and white photograph of the interior view of Roanoke Book and Stationery Company, located at 15 Campbell Avenue SW, taken circa 1920s. Robert T. Boswell, an officer in the corporation, stands in the left foreground, and Vivian Foster stands at the rear of the left aisle. The company was organized in 1906 as the China Art Book Store. Shortly afterward, it became the Roanoke Book and Stationery Company, and in 1934, relocated to the corner of First Street SW and Kirk Avenue SW. 14. Melrose Athletic Club Baseball Team - Photograph of the Melrose Athletic Club baseball team. The typewritten caption on the reverse of the image reads as follows: "Melrose's baseball team of 1905 is pictured with coach, score keeper and what appears to be their mascot (standing before player second from left)". Handwritten notes at the bottom margin of the photograph are illegible. A similar photograph entered into the museum's collection as Object ID # 1983.42.38 describes this as the 1901-1902 team. The photograph was probably taken at the front door of one of the Roanoke Cycle Co. shops which were located at 103 Campbell Avenue S.W. and 107 First Street S.W. in the City of Roanoke, Virginia. According to Raymond Barnes' "A History of the City of Roanoke" each ward was represented by a baseball team.

15. Perry Building, 1956 - A black and white photograph of the Perry Building, erected on the southeast corner of Church Avenue and First Street SW by J.S. Perry, a leading downtown builder. The odd 1890s exterior was removed from a "boom" building in Salem and brought to Roanoke. In this photograph the building was being modernized to house a portion of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association operation. See Raymond Barnes' "A History of the City of Roanoke", page 409.

18. S. H. Heironimus Building - A black and white photograph of traffic at the intersection of Campbell Avenue and 1st Street SW in Roanoke, Virginia. The building in the background was occupied by a department store, S. H. Heironimus, at the time the photograph was taken. The entrance to Heironimus is somewhat obscured by the back of a city bus operated by Safety Motor Transit Corporation. There is a crowd of men and women at the corner bus stop and along the street beside the bus. A car travels along the street in the foreground.

19. S.H. Heironimus Dry Goods Store - A black and white photograph of the Heironimus and Brugh dry goods store, which opened on Commerce (Second) Street in 1890. A new building, pictured here, was erected for Heironimus and Brugh at the northeast corner of Campbell and Henry (First) Streets in 1898. The firm and its successor, S.H. Heironimus, remained at this location until 1915.
