2. 1908 Elks Club Baseball Team - A post card image of the 1908 Elks Club baseball team. The team is seated on the front steps of the Elks Club situate on the east side of Jefferson Street at its intersection with Franklin Road. The team is smartly dressed with the letters "B.P.O.E." appearing across the chest of each player. A handwritten note in the right margin of the card reads as follows: "Elks Base-ball Club June 1908". The Word "Daddy" is pencilled onto the jersey of the player sitting to the right of the gentleman in the suit. The donor of the post card was Dorothy Glass Gentry.

As a young man her father, Corbin Glass, played recreational baseball in the Roanoke area and was on the Elks Club Team in 1908.

7. Elks Club - Picture of the three story Elks Club at Tazwell Avenue and Jefferson Street in Roanoke, Virginia between 1920 - 1925. The building was erected in 1906. Awnings cover the front and side windows. The ground floor area has been enclosed. In front of the building, to the right, there is a bird bath with a swan or heron statue on it. There is an automobile parked in front of the building. There is a stone wall in front of the building with a wrought iron gate. A cupola is on top of the building.

8. Elks Club - Picture of the three story Elks Club at Tazwell Avenue and Jefferson Street in Roanoke, Virginia between 1920 - 1925. The building was erected in 1906. "BPOE" (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) sign on the building identifying it as the Elks Club. There is a flagpole attached to the top of the building. Awnings cover the front windows. There is a metal statue of an elk on the left front lawn. There are 3 Ford car models parked in front of the building. There is a stone wall in front of the building with a wrought iron gate. A cupola is on top of the building. The Elks Club began as a drinking and gaming society in New York City in 1867 that was made up mostly of actors and entertainers bent on having fun and avoiding the New York excise tax on alcohol. They called themselves the "Jolly Corks" after a clever trick using corks on the uninitiated to win free drinks. As membership grew the vision for the club changed and in 1868 the name was changed to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks with a new spirit and directions to help Veterans, Scouting, Scholarships and more.

9. Elks Club - Picture of the three story Elks Club at Tazwell Avenue and Jefferson Street in Roanoke, Virginia just before being demolished. There was an addition to the building on the left side of the building. "BPOE" (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) sign on the building identifying it as the Elks Club. There is a late 1960's or early 1970's Dodge Rambler in the photo.The original stone wall was replaced by a brick wall. There is a sign posted - Demolition by D.H. Griffin, Wrecking Co., Greensboro, N.C.

10. Elks Club-1920s - A photo of the Elk's Club formely located at the S.E. corner of Franklin Road and Jefferson Street.There are two prints of this photo. Twenty three men in summertime attire are lounging out front for the picture taking. This photo was taken about in the mid 1920s . In later years, ( late 1930-early 1940s) the Social Clubs at Jefferson High School held sucessful fund raising dances at the Elks Club.

12. National Business College, Roanoke, Virginia - A black and white photograph of the Coulter Building located at the southwest corner of the intersection of South Jefferson Street and Franklin Road. The primary occupant of the building at the time this photograph was taken was National Business College which offered practical business courses. The college was accessed through an arch on the Franklin Road facade of the building which can be seen in the photograph. Commercial space was leased on the street level, the primary tenant being Peoples Drug Store located at the street corner. Students could often be seen on the balcony overlooking the Medical Arts Service Center. More recently the building has been renovated with the local water authority occupying the ground floor and professional offices on the floors above. The service center has been razed and replaced by a parking lot. The Patrick Henry Hotel has been renovated.

13. New Elks Club - New Elks Club in Roanoke, Virginia located on Persinger Drive built in 1975. The Elks Club began as a drinking and game playing society in New York City in 1867. It was made up mostly of actors and entertainers and known as the "Jolly Corks", which was a clever trick on the uninitiated in order to win free drinks. As membership in the group grew the vision of the organization changed. There were those who wanted to keep it as a drinking and gaming faction and those that wanted to help the community. When a vote was taken by the members the latter faction won. Thus, in February 1868 the name was changed to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) with a new spirit and direction to help Veterans, Scouting, Scholarships and more.

15. Roanoke Post Office - New Post Office at Rutherford Ave, 1975. Photograph is taken from across the street, presumably when the post office wasn't open, as the parking lot is empty. The building is remaniscent of 1960s-1970s architecture, with a trapezoidal barrier demarcating the entrance.
