American Theater - Photo postcard of the American Theater, 215 S. Jefferson Street, at the northwest corner of Jefferson Street and Kirk Avenue. Exterior photo was taken circa 1935 to 1945. The American Theater opened March 26, 1928. The photo shows some of the adjacent buildings on Kirk Avenue and a portion of the adjacent First National Exchange Bank.

Business Signs in Downtown Roanoke - A black and white photograph of some of the business signs in downtown Roanoke, including the H&C Coffee neon sign, the Colonial-American National Bank sign, and the FNEB (First National Exchange Bank) sign in the background. This photograph was part of a move to create regulations on signage in the Roanoke Valley. In 1927, Harold and Clarence Woods, brothers from Greensboro, North Carolina, established Woods Brother's Coffee Company in Roanoke, Virginia. They started the company with the simple belief that "Service, Quality and Freshness" would sell. After a brief period, Harold purchased Clarence's interest in the young company and Clarence returned to North Carolina. Harold Woods grew the company by purchasing one 150-pound burlap bag of green coffee at a time. The coffee was hand-roasted, ground and packed and then sold to the local merchants of the Roanoke Valley. The coffee was branded "H&C Coffee." Inspired by a Camel cigarette sign Woods saw in New York's Times Square that featured a man who appeared to be blowing smoke rings (steam, actually), the H&C sign went up on the company's building on Campbell Avenue Southeast in the late 1940s. It was moved to the Ames Hotel in 1964, when the company's headquarters was knocked down to make way for Interstate 581.

Campbell Ave & Jefferson Street looking west - This photo is part of the Roanoke Beautification Project. It is a copy of 1964.42.8. It shows the view of Campbell west from the intersection with Jefferson, but with the streetcar lines and overhead wires removed from the photo. The cornices of the buildings have also been altered.

First National Exchange Bank Letter Opener - The object is a First National Exchange Bank letter opener. The letter opener has one large metal blade that comes to a sharp point. The handle doubles for a fold out knife on the opposite end of the letter opener. The handle has black text that states, "THE FIRST NATIONAL EXCHANGE BANK OF ROANOKE "BOOSTERS" 1955". The knife blade is rusting.
