   This is a page of the autograph book belonging to Miss Sophy Pole of Hagerstown Maryland, later of Roanoke, Virginia. A poem was written to Miss Pole: "Fall in the water from the deck; fall from the roof and break your neck; fall from the sky so high above; But never, never fall in love." The scrolling signature is not easily deciphered. The page is completed by saying: "May you enjoy life as a pig does a melon patch"
