3. 1890 Snowstorm - This is a picture of Knepp Livery Stable at 327 Jefferson Street with men shoveling snow off the roof during the "big" snow of 1890. There are eleven men on the roof with shovels and eleven wagons and buggies outside. Knepp's was located at the corner of Church Ave. and south Jefferson Street. It later became the location of the Sports Man Grill, Pool Parlor, and Bowling Alley.

The photos shows many shops/stores including: Magee's Pharmacy and Singer Sewer on the left side, and Henerbry Jewelry, Kann's, Isis Theater, Economy Bros, Mungen Woolworth, Ramsey Shoe Co., Roanoke Hardware, Bush & Hancock, Newark Shoe Store, Globe Clothings, and Walk-Over Boot Shop on the right.

10. A close up of the Carlton Terrace Building, Roanoke, Virginia - A black and white photograph of the entrance to the Carlton Terrace Building located at 920 through 924 South Jefferson Street at the west edge of Orchard Hill. The Building was occupied by apartments, doctor's offices, and at times a coffee shop, beauty salon, and a pharmacy. More recently its sole occupant was the College of Health Sciences. The building and the parking garage have been razed. A car, possibly a Pontiac or Chevrolet, is parked at the curb in front of the building. The steps pictured lead to a lobby just beyond the glass entrance doors.

11. Alleghany Club - The Sigma Alpha Club, which later became the Alleghany Club in 1911, was a refuge for young men of good families to gather for a drink or play poker in a gentlemanly manner. They held many dances which were a delight to the women. Most members, when older, joined the Shenandoah Club, which later absorbed the Alleghany Club. The club was located at 915 Jefferson St. The above members were: (seated) Clair Snyder, Dick McDowell amd Richard Royer; (standing) Sam Staples, Harvey White, W. W. S. Butler, Jr; Dick Hobbie, Joe Hunter, Strother Jones and Paul Hunter. Sigma Alpha was the emblem on the skull, which is being held by Dick McDowell.

13. Alleghany Institute Baseball Team - Black and white photograph of the Alleghany Institute baseball team for the year1898. Handwritten notes on the reverse of the photograph identify the player seated on the floor as Walter Engleby, outfielder. In the second row the player on the left is identified as one of the Handy brothers "who owned school - taught school and played on the football and baseball teams". In the back row the player on the left holding the baseball is unidentified. The next two players are identified in order as Corbin Glass and Bill Peck. The next player is identified as Earnest Simpson with a question mark. According to Raymond Barnes' "A History of the City of Roanoke", Alleghany Institute opened in September,1886, and by 1898 was located in the former home of Erasmus H. Stewart on Jefferson Street where the barn and carriage house were converted into classrooms. In the mid 1890s A. Kingman Handy and S. Spieden Handy were involved in the operation of the school according to the City Directory of the City of Roanoke

14. American Theater - Photo postcard of the American Theater, 215 S. Jefferson Street, at the northwest corner of Jefferson Street and Kirk Avenue. Exterior photo was taken circa 1935 to 1945. The American Theater opened March 26, 1928. The photo shows some of the adjacent buildings on Kirk Avenue and a portion of the adjacent First National Exchange Bank.

18. American Theatre, circa 1945 - A black and white photograph of the American Theatre, located at 215 South Jefferson Street in Roanoke, Virginia. This photograph was taken circa 1945. The American Theatre opened its doors on March 26, 1928, and closed on September 30, 1971. This movie "palace", with its fish pond, grand foyer, mosaic tiles, wrought-iron chandeliers, and swag-draped balcony, was razed in 1973 for the new First National Exchange Bank. Henry B. Boynton also had a hand in its design and construction. The firm of Smithey and Boynton designed and built many famous buildings in the valley, such as the Shenandoah Life Building.

19. An Aerial View of Downtown Roanoke - A black and white aerial photograph of the City of Roanoke, Virginia centered over the downtown area. The Patrick Henry Hotel is a prominent landmark in the foreground with Tinker Mountain in the background. Jefferson Street which is the central traffic artery in the photograph runs from south to north intersected by the Norfolk & Western Railway running from west to east. At the time the photograph was taken the Hunter Viaduct carried traffic from Williamson Road onto Jefferson Street in the downtown area. It has since been razed.

Attendees of the 5th Annual Spring Graduate Course, 1931 - A black and white photograph of the attendees of the 5th Annual Spring Graduate Course, sponsored by Gill Memorial Hospital, held in Roanoke, Virginia, March 23-28, 1931. The individuals are identified by number at the bottom of the photograph, although the very bottom set of names are partially cut off. The photograph was taken in Elmwood Park, on Jefferson Street, with Gill Memorial Hospital in the background. In 1931, the two residences to the right of the Hospital belonged to S. Guy Hash and to George W. Tompkins respectively.
