Contest Winner Wendy Peaks at Lakeside Amusement Park - The back of the photo has the following; "Wendy Peaks, 11, a rising sixth-grader at Cloverdale Elementary School, submitted the winning entry in Lakeside Amusement Park's "Name the Marionette Theatre" contest which was conducted at Lakeside this summer. Beginning August 25, the 175 seat theatre will be known as "The Strings 'N Things Fantasy Theatre." Lakeside opened in 1920 and was located in Salem, Virginia at the intersection of U.S. Route 460 (East Main Street in Salem) and State Route 419 (Electric Road in Salem). The original Lakeside charter called for the pool, athletic fields, and a planned hotel. No mention was made of rides. Yet within a few years, Lakeside had added a "Twirl-around" (Ferris wheel), "Lindy Planes" (named for heroic aviator Charles Lindbergh), pony rides, and other attractions. Probably most popular was a roller coaster known successively as the Thriller, Mountain Speedway, and the Wildcat.

The name of the subject and the camera settings are noted on the back of the photograph. The park opened in Roanoke County in 1920 and the pool and the roller coaster became the main attractions.
