7. Lakeside Amusement Park - A circa 1920 George Davis photograph showing the crowded boardwalk at Lakeside Amusement Park near Salem, Virginia. Visible is the large pool with it sand beach, the bumper car pavilion, and the "Thriller" roller coaster. This picture was probably taken on a Sunday afternoon as most of the women wore hats, the men in suits and the children in dress clothes.

8. Lakeside Ferris Wheel - A black and white photograph of the ferris wheel at Lakeside Amusement Park, taken in the 1920s. Lakeside opened in 1920 and was located in Salem, Virginia at the intersection of U.S. Route 460 (East Main Street in Salem) and State Route 419 (Electric Road in Salem). The original Lakeside charter called for the pool, athletic fields, and a planned hotel. No mention was made of rides. Yet within a few years, Lakeside had added a "Twirl-around" (Ferris wheel), "Lindy Planes" (named for heroic aviator Charles Lindbergh), pony rides, and other attractions. Probably most popular was a roller coaster known successively as the Thriller, Mountain Speedway, and the Wildcat.
