3. A train of empty coal hopper cars, westbound west of Montgomery Tunnel. - Montgomery Tunnel was a favorite spot for Winston Link. There was a heavy grade in the westward direction, so trains exiting from the west portal of the tunnel were working hard.

4. Class A Locomotive passing a water tank. - Class A Locomotive passing a water tank. This photo was originally made in color for the cover of Winston Link's sixth and last LP album of N&W railroad sounds, Mainline to Panther. One side of the LP is devoted to recordings made on freight trains Nos. 84, eastbound and 85, westbound, between Crewe, Virginia and Roanoke. The locomotive recorded in most of these sequences is Class A 1238, but the number of the Class A locomotive, westbound in this photo, is not clear. Note: photograph with this object ID is in B&W. While Link didn't identify the train in this photo, it is surely the Cavalier, (train No. 27 to Petersburg, Virginia, the Train No. 15) westbound to Cincinnati, Ohio.

7. Colonna Shipyards in Norfolk, Virginia, with the Cavalier - The ancient tug in the Colonna Shipyards for a refit, appealed to Winston Link as a suitable foreground for the first of only two night photos he made in color. While Link didn't identify the train in this photo, it is surely the Cavalier, (train No. 27 to Petersburg, Virginia, the Train No. 15) westbound to Cincinnati, Ohio.

8. Ghost Town, Stanley, Virginia. - Ghost Town is the result of a combination of Winston Link's vision along with good communications and cooperation all around. Link recongnized that with dramatic lighting, he could change the appearance of the main street of an ordinary little town into a setting of high visual drama. The people in the town cooperated fully in helping with the setup, including letting Link and his crew take refuge under the marquee of the local movie theater. Link telephoned the N&W dispatcher in Roanoke from the phone booth in the picture to check on the progress of oncoming trains. The N&W cooperated by holding up two freight trains which were due to follow each other in rapid sucession, so that the photographer would have time to change the numerous flashbulbs spread across the scene, including one in the phone booth. This is the best exposure, and is the version used in Steam, Steel & Stars. P.52-3.

11. Ghost Train -- Passenger, Norfolk, Virginia. - Ghost Train -- Passenger, Norfolk, Virginia. The pullman extra at 10:55p.m., westbound, passing under the signal bridge, locomotive 125 K2. When this train, which Link as noted as a "Pullman Extra," came through at 10:55 p.m., he fired the flashbulbs. For almost 30 years he regarded these photos as failures, but reconsidered them when one of the first museum exhibitions of this N&W photo, at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, was titled Ghost Trains. These two "ghost train" photos became the cover images for the catalogue. This train is most probably the second section of the Cavalier, traveling on to Cincinnati.

12. Ghost Train --Time Freight No. 83, Westbound, over Bridge Five. - The ghost train. Time freight, 83, westbound from Norfolk, having passed over bridge 5. This photograph was an experiment which, for almost 30 years, Winston Link considered to be a failure. It was photographed in the fall of 1955 at Bridge 5 over the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Virginia. Link made a three-minute time exposure in an effort to include the huge Reeve Avenue generating plant of the Virginia Electric Power Company (VEPCO), in the far distance. He then fired the flashbulbs when time freight No. 83 crossed the bridge. He considered the lights shining through the bulk of the engine to be unsuccessful unitl he was reminded of this and its companion photo, Ghost Train--Passenger, (NW420A), when The Chrysler Museum in Norfolk gave the title Ghost Trains to Link's exhibition held there in 1983. The two "ghost" photos were used on the cover of the catalogue for that exhibition.

13. Highball for the Doubleheader - Highball for the Doubleheader, Blue Ridge Grade. Winston Link's 19th trip to the N&W was one of his shortest, April 20-April 26, 1959. Link made the trip just to create this photograph. He was about to issue the third of his LP recordings, "Thunder on Blue Ridge", and he wanted a Blue Ridge image on the cover.

19. The Cavalier passes the Colonna Shipyards. - The Cavalier, Locomotive J-606, train 21 leaves 7:45p.m., passing Colonna shipyard over bridge 5, west. One of the "Ghost Train" series. This is the black and white version of an image that is better known in color. The ancient tug in the Colonna Shipyards, in for a refit appealed to Winston Link as a suitable foreground for the streamlined beauty of a Class J locomotive pulling the Cavalier at the beginning of its westward trip to Cincinnati, Ohio. This one of only a handful of photos of the N&W that Link made west of Blue Ridge Grade, which is just east of Roanoke, Virginia.
