Mrs. Gladys Harringer, station agent at White Top, Virginia, (and one of only four women agents on the N&W at that time) works on a quilt while waiting for the train. A coal burning pot-belly stove heats the room. White Top was distinguished by being the highest point (3,577 feet) east of the Rockies reached by a regularly scheduled passenger train. © O. In Norfolk & Western's East Roanoke Shops, night foreman W. P. Isabell, hands clasped behind him, watches two cranes move the boiler, high-pressure engine & drive wheels of Y6 #2180 into position on top of the low-pressure engine & drive wheels. This procedure was know as "wheeling" and was part of the major overhaul all steam locomotives underwent at least every five years.

            Hand-held railroad lantern. A slender cylindrical lantern. Painted silver with a movable stand. The red handle is on the bottom along with the switch for turning the light on and off. Star design stamped on stand sides, N&W inscription on side. Has been painted silver.
