Included correspondence to Trout from Ben P. Ainsworth of Lexington, Virginia, places Jackson at the Blackhorse through statements made to Ainsworth by Hezekiah Kyle of Amsterdam, Virginia, who recalled seeing Jackson at the tavern when Kyle was a small boy.

Carvins Cove - This photograph of a swimming hole on Carvins Creek in Roanoke County or Botetourt County, Virginia was taken prior to 1927 when the creek was dammed to provide a reliable water supply for the City of Roanoke, Virginia. A small waterfall spills over the rocks in the background and a swimmer splashes in the left center of the photograph. The area now known as Carvins Cove Reservoir is one of the largest municipal parks in the nation, featuring boating, fishing, biking, and hiking; however, swimming is no longer allowed.

18. Cast-iron Footed Serving Bowl - Footed serving bowl, ca.1810. This cast iron bowl was made at "Speedwell", the Harvey family plantation, where an iron furnace was operated from 1800 to 1825, in the Starkey area of what is now Roanoke County. "Speedwell" was named for the ship in which an ancestor of the Harveys immigrated to America. Cast iron was favored for use by frontiersmen, slaves, and indentured servants due to its sturdiness.
