  4. Dewey Mess, Company G, 2nd Virginia Volunteers - A black and white photograph of Company G, 2nd Virginia Volunteers, U.S. Volunteers. The men in the photograph are identified across the bottom. "Sergeant Billy" is the name of the mascot goat. "Dewey Mess" is printed on the bottom left side of the photograph, and on the reverse side is printed "Spanish American War". The two young men seated on the left are holding the Cuban flag, while the two men on the right hold the American flag. The man in the center has a horse shoe on his knee. The words "Dewey Mess" are written on the left front of the photograph. The following narrative was taken from "History of Roanoke County," by George S. Jack and Edward Boyle Jacobs: Military Companies Enlisted During Spanish American War 1898 During the Spanish American War, Roanoke City placed two companies of infantry at the service of the country. Company F of the 2nd Virginia Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, was commanded by Captain Robert F. Taylor with James 0. B. Palmer, First Lieutenant, and Homer G. Hogan, Second Lieutenant. Company G of the 2nd Virginia Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, was commanded by Captain Ballard P. Hatcher, with William R. Engleby, First Lieutenant, and John W. Hancock, Second Lieutenant. Company F was mustered into the United States service May 12, 1898, and mustered out of the United States service December 15, 1898, one hundred officers and men. Company G was mustered into the United States service May11,1898, and mustered out of the United States service December 15, 1898, one hundred and four officers and men.
