F. 2nd Va Volunteer Infantry /Roanoke Machine Works Guard - A photo of Company F, 2nd Virginia Volunteer infantry, the ROANOKE MACHINE WORKS GUARD commanded by Captain Robert F.Taylor previous to embarking by train for the war with Spain in 1898. The company served in Jacksonville, Florida as well as Tampa, Florida -never embarking for oversea duty. Robert Taylor later served as Roanoke's Chief of Police in the 1920s.

The individuals stand in their informal uniforms, with ammonition belts around their waist. The four seated in front surround the Company's mascot, Sgt Billy. Over their laps are the American flag (over the two on the right) and the Cuban flag (over the laps of those at the left).

4. Dewey Mess, Company G, 2nd Virginia Volunteers - A black and white photograph of Company G, 2nd Virginia Volunteers, U.S. Volunteers. The men in the photograph are identified across the bottom. "Sergeant Billy" is the name of the mascot goat. "Dewey Mess" is printed on the bottom left side of the photograph, and on the reverse side is printed "Spanish American War". The two young men seated on the left are holding the Cuban flag, while the two men on the right hold the American flag. The man in the center has a horse shoe on his knee. The words "Dewey Mess" are written on the left front of the photograph. The following narrative was taken from "History of Roanoke County," by George S. Jack and Edward Boyle Jacobs: Military Companies Enlisted During Spanish American War 1898 During the Spanish American War, Roanoke City placed two companies of infantry at the service of the country. Company F of the 2nd Virginia Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, was commanded by Captain Robert F. Taylor with James 0. B. Palmer, First Lieutenant, and Homer G. Hogan, Second Lieutenant. Company G of the 2nd Virginia Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, was commanded by Captain Ballard P. Hatcher, with William R. Engleby, First Lieutenant, and John W. Hancock, Second Lieutenant. Company F was mustered into the United States service May 12, 1898, and mustered out of the United States service December 15, 1898, one hundred officers and men. Company G was mustered into the United States service May11,1898, and mustered out of the United States service December 15, 1898, one hundred and four officers and men. 5. Roanoke Light Infantry - Black and white photograph of the Roanoke Light Infantry of the Spanish American War. Samuel Seldon Brooke of Roanoke organized and became Captain of the Roanoke Light Infantry in 1889.

6. Silk banner - Banner for Captain George H. Bentley Camp No. 3, instituted 5 May 1908, Department of Virginia, United Spanish War Veterans. The Spanish American War Seal is embroidered on the front. It shows a cross with four arms of equal length. The arms are inscribed, clockwise from the top, Cuba, Puerto Rico, USA, and Philippine Islands. In the center of the cross is a round seal with the words: Spanish War Veterans 1898-1902. The Virginia seal is embroidered on the back. The banner is made of sky blue silk embroidered with silk thread. It has gold fringe on three sides.

9. Spanish American War Footlocker - Foot locker made with stiffened leather, copper, and metal fastenings. Large leather handles on left and right edges of trunk. Foot locker has two clasps and a heavy lock at front of trunk. When opened, interior is a deep red, with copper riveted around edges. Stiffened red leather removable insert sits on wooden pegs at left and right edges. On left and right edges, written in heavy black marker, with graphite lines still visible, is written: MAJ.R.G.S./ U.S.ARMY./ROANOKE.VA. This trunk was used during the Spanish American War by Major Richard Gordon Simmons, the Assistant to the Chief Surgeon of the Seventh Army Corps.
